THE SOCIAL WORKER

Uversa Oumbajuah

Uversa believes that she was born with supernatural abilities and calls herself an oracle.

Her name is a marriage of "universe" and "verse." The way Uversa talks resembles verse. She has a warm, friendly aura and is open and direct when she speaks.

She can be found performing readings at Union Square Park with her tarot cards and rune stones by the fountain. In the winter, she relocates indoors to cafes such as Zaro's Bakery in midtown Manhattan.

"When people pay money, they pay more attention and are likely to change their ways," she says. One of the clients Uversa will never forget is a Pakistani man who had planned to blow himself up on a train until she gave him a reading.
